Gosaikunda (Gosainkunda) is a sacred lake located at an altitude of approx. 4380 m. and surrounded by mountains in almost all of its sides. Gosainkunda is located in the Langtang national Park and it is one of the religious sites of Nepal. During the Janai Purnima festival in Nepal which occurs every year in August, many people visit Gosainkunda to take the holy bath in the lake. During winters (October till June), this lake remains frozen, and during summer the lake water melts down to form the Trishuli river.
We can reach Gosaikunda, using several ways. Below are the three ways to reach Gosainkunda:
- Sundarijal-Chisapani
- Melamchi
- Dhunche
The way from Chisapani and Melamchi meet at village named Kutumsang and follow the same route further to Gosaikunda. If you want to save two days, you must go through Melamchi, Its take 5 to 6 hours to reach Kutumsang from Chanaute. Chanaute is a place where we start walking, it is several kilometers ahead from Melamchi bazar, there is direct bus service from kathmandu to Chanaute which is provided by Helambu Yatayat (Bus Service). The bus can be found at Koteshwor and the main station for Helambu Yatayat is Chuchepati, near Pasang Lhamu Park.) Kutumsang is also the gate for Langtang National park. From Kutumsang we can reach the lake in two days.
When going through Dhunche, there is bus service from Balaju, Machapokhari to Dhunche, overnight at Dhunche, the next day, you can reach lake if you start walking early in the morning, but it is not very good idea, you may need some acclimatization before reaching the top. It reduce the problem of altitude sickness. It is always good idea to trek round, So i suggest you to make trip like Dhunche-Melamchi/Chisapani or vice versa.
